Diocese of Yukon Welcomes New Rector to Christ Church Cathedral

The Diocese of Yukon is delighted to announce the appointment of the Rev. Dr. John Chawarika as the new Rector of Christ Church Cathedral, Whitehorse.

Rev. Dr. Chawarika is excited to join the cathedral community and the Anglican Diocese of Yukon. Ordained in the Anglican tradition, he is associated with the Anglican Diocese of Harare in the Church of the Province of Central Africa. His ministry experience in Zimbabwe and the United States brings a distinctive intercultural perspective to Christian ministry, pastoral care, and theological education.

John comes to Christ Church Cathedral as a theologian, educator, researcher, and advocate for pastoral care. His ministry and academic career have been shaped by a deep commitment to the Christian faith, theological education, pastoral ministry, and the service of God's people. He has contributed to the study of Anglicanism, Christian mission, martyrdom, and the development of Christianity in Zimbabwe.

As a theological educator, John has taught at Bishop Gaul Theological Seminary and served as a part-time lecturer at Great Zimbabwe University. His academic and professional interests include Church History and Polity, Practical Theology, Pastoral Care and Counseling, Christian Missions and Outreach, and questions surrounding religion, gender, and sexuality.

His most recent educational pursuit was graduate training in pastoral and clinical care and counseling at Garrett Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, USA. He brings together sound theological scholarship and compassionate pastoral care, seeking to help individuals, congregations, and communities engage faithfully with the challenges of contemporary life while remaining grounded in the Christian tradition.

Reflecting on his new ministry, John shared:

“My prayer is to collaboratively work with the cathedral, strengthening the Christian Whitehorse community, and encouraging people to discover God's presence and purpose in their lives.”
